Hurricane season lasts from June through November each year. Hurricanes are one of nature’s most powerful forces, turning warm ocean water into powerful storms capable of mass destruction. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts a 70 percent likelihood of 10 to 14 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which four to eight could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher). One to four of these may become major hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5 with winds of 111 mph or higher).
